Travel agents look back on 2017, pick best bits

Traveltalk asked travel agents to reflect on the year that was and select their top destinations, functions and everything in between. Here’s what they said.

TravelManagers’ personal travel manager NAKITA BYRNE - Mount Arthur, NSW

MOST MEMORABLE FUNCTION - Hands down, the 2017 Avis Travel Agent Scholarship Awards cocktail party & dinner!

Winning the 2017 AVIS travel Agent Scholarship was the highlight of my year professionally, it has inspired me to think outside of the square and in turn provide a better customer experience.

MOST MEMORABLE HOTEL - Castaway Island FIJI

Stunning beaches, beautiful traditional bures with hand painted ceilings, awesome snorkelling right off the resort, food was amazing every single day - I can see why this resort has a high return guest rating!

MOST MEMORABLE DINING - Pipeclay Pumphouse Restaurant, Mudgee NSW

Only using home grown or locally sourced produce including wines, every course in their 8 course degustation menu is to die for!

MOST MEMORABLE DESTINATION - Fiji

I got married there in May this year and had the best experience! What I love about Fiji is that you can disconnect from the rest of the world and just be present in the moment. The beautiful Fijian people really assist in making this happen, nothing truly is a worry over there!

MOST MEMORABLE TRAVELTALK MAGAZINE ISSUE - November 2017

I like to keep abreast on new developments and enjoyed reading the What's Hot for 2018.

MOST MEMORABLE FUNCTION – The Travel Counsellors Global Conference, Manchester UK

Every year our global conference just gets better and better. The content, the speakers and the entertainment this year were outstanding.

MOST MEMORABLE FLIGHT – Etihad

Getting upgraded in the air on your birthday is pretty memorable!

MOST MEMORABLE HOTEL – Crown Towers, Perth

Not only a luxurious hotel but the lunch buffet at the Epicurean Restaurant is incredible.

MOST MEMORABLE DINING – Industry Beans, Fitzroy Melbourne

I love coffee. When I arrived in Australia, I found this trendy coffee roastery, café and brew bar in the back streets of Fitzroy.

MOST MEMORABLE ATTRACTION – Sydney Opera House

Seeing such an iconic piece of architecture with my own eyes for the first time in my life was very special.

MOST MEMORABLE DESTINATION – Cartagena, Colombia

Colombia is a destination that should be on everyone’s travel wish list. The UNESCO listed Cartagena is a charming old town that is beautifully preserved.

MOST MEMORABLE CRUISE – Halong Bay, Vietnam

Because I travel so much, family time is really important to me. Taking a cruise with my family through Halong Bay was a wonderful way to reconnect.

MOST MEMORABLE TRAVELTALK MAGAZINE ISSUE – March 2017

I really liked this edition as I had just moved to Melbourne and enjoyed the features on experiential travel and getting to know some of the highlights of domestic travel.

TravelManagers’ personal travel manager ERIN ROSS - Mount Cotton, QLD

MOST MEMORABLE FUNCTIONWithout question the overwhelming success of my TravelManagers/Elysium Beanies for Brain Cancer gala dinner fundraiser which raised an incredible $13,000 for Brain Cancer Research. In addition to the fundraiser evening with its sensational food, wine and champagne, charity auction and prizes galore, I also designed a TravelManagers beanie to raise further funds and I was absolutely blown away by the support from PTMs throughout Australia.

MOST MEMORABLE HOTEL – Phuket Marriott Merlin Beach

Absolutely love the location with its own private beach, the facilities, the staff, a great variety of room options to suit all budgets, the Thai food is always fantastic and the Mojitos were pretty good too!

MOST MEMORABLE DINING – Cuca’s Jimbaran Bali

The most divine desserts, tapas and cocktails – what more could a girl want!

MOST MEMORABLE ATTRACTION – Ha Long Bay

An absolute highlight of the year was getting up to do Tai Chi on the top deck of our boat, first thing in the morning as we just sat there in the middle of a misty, eerie Ha Long bay - a truly stunning part of the world.

MOST MEMORABLE DESTINATION – Vietnam

Possibly my new favourite destination, a ‘polite’ and gentle destination, There is a genuineness with the locals, they want you to enjoy their country, have a good time and are always smiling.

MOST MEMORABLE TRAVELTALK MAGAZINE ISSUE  June 2017 with that great special about family holidays in Hawaii.
