Learning the TravelManagers difference: INTERVIEW

Here, we talk to TravelManagers Executive General Manager MICHAEL GAZAL and Australia’s best mobile travel advisor, KATHY MILLETT after they picked up two big NTIA prizes.

Who: Michael Gazal, Executive General Manager, TravelManagers

Award: Best Mobile Travel Advisor Network

You look extremely pleased to win this award. It must mean a lot.

It’s a big deal! It’s been in the pipeline for many years. We’ve put a lot of effort into this year’s submission and we’re just so proud to be acknowledged. It’s such a great celebration for our network.

What made the judges pick your company ahead of the competition?

Probably because Grant, our COO, did the presentation and he’s better looking than me!

Overall, during the presentation we tried to really answer the questions as best we could. At the end of the day the responses to the questions are one thing but it’s the substance behind it that counts.

I think it’s also what we provide as a network: there’s a reason why we’re the largest in Australia and there’s a reason why we provide so much support to our network. I think it’s what we do, it’s not what we say, and we do really back it up. We really do walk the walk.

It’s also a great validation of your team.

Our team are just so passionate about what they do and for me it’s a pleasure to work with the organisation because it’s not hard work when you’ve got a National Partnership Office and a network that are all really one big family. Maybe sometimes it’s a bit disjointed – but it’s a great network.

What is the TravelManagers difference?

At the heart of it for me there is only one word – culture. What does culture mean? It means we care. When things aren’t going so well for people, we are there.

Sure, we provide a great business model for people, but at the end of the day they do feel like they are part of something bigger than just themselves.

Who: Kathy Millett, TravelManagers, Claremont, WA

Award: Best Mobile Travel Advisor

Tell us a bit about yourself and what this award means to you?

I’ve travelled since I was born. I was born in Africa and I’ve been on the move ever since.

Winning this award means everything and I’m just blown away. It was both humbling and awe-inspiring to receive the award in front of all these people. There are so many people who are probably better than me but to be in the right place and the right moment has just been incredible.

You clearly love being a travel consultant.

I’ve been in the industry for an awfully long time. It is the experience and the personalisation and I just love what I do.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank?

TravelManagers, because they have been amazing. I used to work in a bricks-and-mortar agency, which was great, but due to circumstances I had to go mobile and it’s been the best thing that I ever did.

I’d also like to thank my family: they’ve put up with the tears and the tantrums, the bad days and the good days, and they’ve travelled with me.

What is the TravelManagers difference?

Personal. We are the personal travel managers and we deliver.
