Meet the NTIA finalists: PATRICK HULL

Orbit World Travel’s Patrick Hull is up for Young Travel Agent of the Year. Get his top travel tips and find out what he thinks of industry acronyms.

WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR YOUR CLIENTS THAT THE INTERNET CAN’T?

Answer questions, have a chat and just generally be friendly! Computers can do a lot for us, but can they ask how your day is going in a meaningful way?

WHERE’S THE NEXT ‘HOT’ DESTINATION?

I would probably say Japan. With the Rugby World Cup this year and the Olympics the next, Japan will be sinking whatever money it can in to its tourism.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST TRAVEL TIP?

If you’re going to a country that speaks a language you don’t understand, downloading a translation app on your phone that can store languages offline is incredibly useful to have, especially if you don’t have access to internet. I use Google Translate, as I can take pictures of signs and have it translated. I can also have conversations through my phone with locals

WHAT ARE THE BEST AND WORST PARTS OF YOUR JOB?

Best part would be the people I work with – everyone is incredibly supportive and happy to help however they can.

Worst part would be trying to learn all the acronyms in the industry – there are so many of them.

IF YOU WEREN’T A TRAVEL AGENT, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

I would be playing music, either in a band or by myself.
