6 ways to adjust your skincare routine for summer

Summer needs a slightly different skincare approach – but in essence, it all boils down to using high SPF and hydrating yourself both on the inside and on the outside, writes SARAH PELHAM for Traveltalk.

It’s summer! The days are longer, the birds are chirping, the sun is warmer – so warm, in fact, that your skin hates everything about it. Not many people have the luxury of getting a beautiful tan without doing any effort. So, to ensure that your skin does not get burned out, dehydrated, and so on, you might want to check into a few skincare tips.



Remember, your summer skincare routine should not be the same as the routine you use during winter, spring, and autumn. So, whether you are at home or packing for a holiday, this is what you should bring for your beauty routine. 


1. Adjust the Usage of Your Sunscreen

During spring and autumn, you may or may not have to use sunscreen – but when it comes to summer, that is something that should not be absent from your skincare routine.

If you have been using it already, then you may have to adjust its usage to “early and often.” 

During summer, the sun can be really strong, which is why it is recommended that you use at least SPF 30.

Otherwise, not only that you may damage and age your skin, but you also expose yourself to developing various skin cancers.


2. Hydrate Your Skin

During summer, you lose a lot of moisture from your body as you are sweating.

You may be drinking enough water, but that water barely has the time to set in before it sweats itself out again. 

This is why you may want to add an intensive mask, or a toner to give you that refreshing moisturising edge.

Make sure that you go for light moisturising products and that you steer clear of products that block your pores.



3. Don’t Forget the Lips
Just like the rest of your body needs sunscreen, the sun may be very drying and harsh on your lips. 

This is why you should try to keep them nice and soft with a lip balm that uses solar protection factor.

Depending on how easily your skin gets tanned, you may go for SPF 15 of SPF 30. 


4. Exfoliate Your Skin

About once a week during summer, you might want to add an exfoliation session in your routine – to ensure that your skin stays nice and clean.

As we mentioned, during summer, we tend to get dehydrated whether we like it or not. Most of it happens during the sweating process.

This causes our skin to peel off and look dry and brittle – which is why an exfoliating mask can help remove that dead skin. 

From time to time, you can also book a professional peeling treatment in a salon for a deeper exfoliation and cleansing session.


5. Use Oil-Free Products

Oil-packed products are generally good in winter, spring, and autumn, as they hydrate your skin – but they are not such a marvellous thing during summer.

These oils will clog your skin, not allowing it to breathe and creating the perfect environment for acne.

To prevent any breakouts, you might want to go for water-based moisturisers rather than oil-based ones, as they are much easier absorbed by the skin.



6. Hydrate Inside-Out

You may be using all the moisturisers in the world, and all the hydrating products that you can imagine – but if your body is dehydrated from the inside, there’s nothing much that you can do about the condition of your body. 

This is why you may want to drink your 8 glasses of water every day – and maybe add one or two more in the mix, since you’ll be sweating out most of it anyway. Especially if you are active or travelling, you need to hydrate properly.
