Meet the NTIA finalists: TENILLE HUNT

Think working in travel is everything it’s cracked up to be? NTIA finalist Tenille Hunt from Chimu Adventures reveals all.

WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR YOUR CLIENTS THAT THE INTERNET CAN’T?

The internet can’t express the excitement of travel. It can’t create the adventure, emotion or a sense of curiosity and wonder that I can as a storyteller from my first hand experiences. Yes, you can read about places on the internet but nothing beats first-hand experience – the passion, knowledge and emotion of a real life conversation based on actually being there. The internet is also so overwhelming as there is just too much information, a lot of which is conflicting. I can sift out the facts and save clients a lot of time by planning itineraries which are based on their taste and budget.

WHERE’S THE NEXT ‘HOT’ DESTINATION?

The polar regions! Australians are well travelled and are looking for new unique experiences and there is so much interest here in Australian to travel to the polar regions – especially Antarctica. There is nothing more exciting than being on a small ship expedition looking for wildlife and exploring some of the world’s most pristine places. I recently returned from the Arctic and am lucky enough to be revisiting Antarctica this November. Nothing beats the excitement of being  on an expedition!

Luxury lodges in Patagonia and the Galapagos Islands are also hot right now! People ate looking for adventurous experiences while still being in comfort and these places provide that.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST TRAVEL TIP?

Eat with the locals! Get away from the tourist trap and get that authentic local experience. There is nothing better than eating a meal, making meaningful connections and getting hot tips from locals. If this isn’t possible at least choose a sustainable restaurant where you know the money is going to the locals.

Ohh and also pack a change of clothes in your carry on in case of lost luggage – there is nothing worse! (Touch wood)!

WHAT ARE THE BEST AND WORST PARTS OF YOUR JOB?

The people I meet and the places I go! I get to inspire and be inspired every day. I share my passion for these incredible places to my clients. Latin America has always been my favourite place to visit and there is nothing better than sharing this love to my agents and receiving an email that they just booked their clients on one of our trips. Or that they want to go there themselves! The worst part of my job……. My bucket list is forever growing!

IF YOU WEREN’T IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

Sailing a small yacht around the Caribbean, drinking a Caprinhina swaying to Buffalo Solider….

Tenille Hunt is in the running for Best Sales Executive (Land) in this year’s National Travel Industry Awards.
