TIPS for creating the ultimate staycation

Temple & Webster Stylist ALLIRA BELL shows us how to transform our house to exude tropical villa vibes.

Australians are spending more time than ever in their homes as social distancing measures continue to tighten as a result of COVID-19. While this does mean putting travel plans on hold, sadly for now, there’s no reason why we can’t still benefit from the blissful feeling of being on vacation.

Tranquil tones

For your own personal holiday home haven, subduing your colour palette is job #1. Strident colour clashes make a fun statement but are best avoided if you’re after relaxation and tranquillity.

Instead, work with a restrained colour palette to keep things tonal and your mood serene. Follow the cues of nature and draw inspiration from the sandy tones and dusty greenery of beachside havens.

Whatever colours you choose, repeat throughout your home to enjoy seamless summer vibes in every room.

Loose layers

One of the best parts about holidaying is the freedom to nap and enjoy an overly comfortable bed without an alarm clock ticking away – so make those z’s count!

Choosing comfortable summer bedding is the difference between a sweaty siesta and a peaceful doze. Opt for natural fibre bedding, like softwash cotton or linen sheets, to help regulate body temperature overnight and absorb any pesky excess moisture.

Make your bed look as good as you feel by choosing throws with decorative detailing – tassels or pom poms are the perfect choice for laid back flair.

Restful reads and delightful decor

Who isn’t guilty of buying books on a whim and never getting around to reading them? Celebrate treasured titles by placing them proudly on display in areas that encourage reading time, like next to the bed or in easy reach of the sofa.

For extra motivation, make reading material super easy to grab by storing neatly upright with bookends either side. Add an earthy vase or sculptural bowl to your vignette and your holiday shelfie is complete!

Warm wattage

We all know low lighting creates ambience, but as the cicadas start to chime and the daylight fades the real secret to a good holiday mood is having pendants and lamps with natural toned shades.

Downlights are handy for areas requiring bright lighting, like the kitchen or bathroom, but placing shaded lighting options strategically will ensure a warm and inviting lighting scheme – no matter the wattage. For the ultimate holiday feel, an oversized pendant adds instant villa vibes.

Tactile towels

No holiday home is complete without an impressive towel collection. Plush and luscious towels are an indispensable but affordable luxury. For extra cosiness and coverage, go for a larger bath sheet size and consider the weight of the towel – higher gsm ratings equate to extra fluffiness!

Keep ragged towels at bay by choosing Turkish cotton, which has longer and denser fibres for extra absorbency. Plus they get softer with every wash, giving you that holiday for many summers to come.
