You might already know Sean from his time as general manager of Flight Centre Travel Group’s Student Flights and My Adventure Travel brands.
In fact, Sean says that G Adventures’ commitment to its agency partners is part of what drew him to join the company. That, and G Adventure’s clear mission to change people's lives through travel.
“The most important consideration for me when choosing to join G Adventures’ was that their values are so closely aligned to my own,” he said.
“I have always believed travel can make the world a better place and change people’s lives, whether that is the lives of people in local communities, those of our customers and partners, or of our local and global team members.”
Traveltalk chatted to Sean about the pandemic, starting a new job and Police Academy.
What was your first ever job and what lessons did you take from it?
My first job was working at an incredibly quiet video rental store. One day it was so quiet that I was able to watch all six Police Academy movies back-to-back. What the quietness in this role did teach me however is the importance of relationships with customers. As I had the time to build personal relationships with each of them I observed that they would come back more often, which as well as being good for business made my job so much more enjoyable.
What has the pandemic taught you about yourself?
The pandemic has taught me many things - who could have ever imagined being in this situation? First, it’s okay to have a bad day every now and again. Second, I’m not as comfortable with complete uncertainty as what I thought I was. Finally, being forced to slow down has taught me what is really important to me in life, which is spending time with my family. We had our first baby mid-pandemic in April last year, and spending time with her and my wife means everything to me.
What’s the first thing you like to do when you start a new job?
The first thing for me is to get to know people and listen. Ask questions, lots of probably very obvious ones, and to learn as much as I can.
What has surprised you about G Adventures?
The biggest surprise for me has been the unrelenting presence of the customer at the forefront of everything that we do. That’s not just customers on our trips and our partners, it’s also our employees and all of our suppliers, as well as the local people in destinations and communities we visit.
I would love to get to Peru and Patagonia. We work in travel and joined the industry for a reason. We haven’t been able to travel for a long time, so it’s time to reward ourselves with something big while at the same time helping to rebuild the local communities that are dependent on tourism for their economic survival.
