Fresh Faces: Visit Sunshine Coast marketing head Jo Prothero

There's more to the Sunshine Coast than its beaches, says new Visit Sunshine Coast head of marketing JO PROTHERO, who's also looking forward to a launch that will have a 'profound impact' on the region.


Where is the last place you travelled and where are you going next?  

Domestically - Palm Cove to thaw out after winter in October 2019, and Tasmania in November to attend a mountain bike conference and ride the trails. 

Internationally - I travelled back to the UK in May 2019 to visit my friends and family for no other reason than I could. 

Next trip is planned for April/May 2020 to Europe for three weeks, taking in Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Russia and Germany.   


Besides your passport, what’s one thing you always take with you on your travels?

My contact lenses! And iphone to capture lots of photos and memories. 


Why did you take up the role at VSC?

Having been at Falls Creek for eight years, I was ready for the next challenge and to be working across the entire Sunshine Coast destination was the real draw card.  



Tell us something people might not know about the Sunshine Coast? 

It’s much more than a beach holiday. Yes, we do have some of Australia’s best beaches, but what makes the region so different – and more appealing – is the diversity of attractions.

The region is as much about the Hinterland and Glass House Mountains as it is about surf and sand.

We also have a vibrant food and arts scene, and because of the geography, we can offer a vast range of adventure activities such as trekking, mountain biking and kayaking.


Tell us the things that are coming up in the region that get you excited. 

Undoubtedly, the launch of Sunshine Coast Airport’s new runway in May will have a profound impact on the region’s tourism future, because it opens up far greater capacity domestically, and eventually from overseas markets.

Our recent NVS and IVS statistics had our market growing at record levels, which should encourage new accommodation development.

Greater dispersal of travellers to some of the lesser known destinations within the region is also a priority.   


What’s your top travel tip?

Keep it simple, off the beaten track and connect with the locals for a true, authentic encounter.
