HOW DO YOU TRAVEL? Emma Newton, Wendy Wu Tours

Despite being an international specialist, sometimes the most memorable travel experiences are those enjoyed to home

Wendy Wu Tours BDM WA/SA, Emma Newton

Wendy Wu Tours recently welcomed Emma Newton to the team as its new State Account Manager for Western Australia and South Australia.

Newton is no stranger to the travel industry or the Perth market, joining Wendy Wu Tours after five years with Air New Zealand and prior to that with QBE Insurance. Way back when, Emma is also a former travel advisor herself, with that experience crucial to helping her understand the workload and demands on advisors today.

The all-inclusive tour operator is celebrating its 25th birthday in 2023 and is continuing to set sales records for its global range of tours, including its specialist destinations of China and Japan.

Before Emma headed out on her latest sales calls to visit advisors in her home territory, Traveltalk caught up with her to find out more about her own travel experiences and her love for the industry.

Do you pack light or take the whole wardrobe?

That really depends on the destination.

Bali = light(ish), Europe = whole wardrobe, and then regret it mid-trip, but still overpack next time, that's what seems to be the pattern. I never learn!

Are you packed well in advance or a last-minute crammer?

The packing list is created well before the trip and the packing itself is usually a week before take-off. I'm a planner for sure!

What keeps you entertained on a long-haul flight?

You can't go past binge-watching a good series end to end with a glass of wine, listening to a Spotify playlist, lots of walk breaks around the cabin and sneaky squats in the galley while I look for snacks and chat with the crew.

Besides your phone, what essential technology do you travel with?

My rechargeable pocket fan if I'm going somewhere hot, and my power bank to keep all my batteries charged while I'm on the go.

Have you ever lost your bag while travelling? Did you see it again?

Touch wood! I have never lost my luggage...yet.

The Gibb River Road stands out as Emma's personal travel highlight.

What is the most amazing place you’ve been in the world?

I have been fortunate enough to travel to 67 countries thus far, and the trip that still blows my mind is within my very own home state of WA, which we discovered during Emperor McGowan's lockdown of the state across the pandemic - the Kimberley!

Being a keen photographer, it was a dream trip for me, and the scenery didn't disappoint. Here's a photo I took whilst letting our tyres down at Cape Leveque before we took on the Gibb River Road.

And finally, what is your most hilarious or unbelievable travel story?

Nothing that should be repeated here! What happens on tour stays on tour.
