The newly promoted National Business Partnership Manager shares some of her worldly stories with Traveltalk.

TravelManagers National Business Partnership Manager, Julia McLean

Home based agent network TravelManagers Australia recently promoted Julia McLean to the newly created role of National Business Partnership Manager.

After more than six years with the company, McLean's new duties include working with TravelManagers state-based counterparts to provide ongoing local support to the network and its clients.

Following her promotion, Traveltalk grabbed five minutes with Julia to find out a bit about her personal travel habits, history and highlights.

Do you pack light or take the whole wardrobe?

I like to think I am a light packer but in reality, I take way too much. Always come home with unworn clothes.

Are you packed well in advance or a last-minute crammer?

Well in advance. I love the pre-travel excitement and planning what to pack is a part of that.

What keeps you entertained on a long-haul flight?

I will always pack a book so I’m not watching the screen the whole time. I do enjoy a good movie inflight though.

Besides your phone, what essential technology do you travel with?

Portable phone charger! Nothing worse than getting caught out with low phone battery, especially when our phones are also our wallets and cameras. I always have a portable charger with me.

Have you ever lost your bag while travelling? Did you see it again?

No I haven’t…touch wood!

Julia's personal travel highlight was an African safari.

What is your most hilarious or unbelievable travel story?

You can take your pick from a G-rated episode or a David Attenborough episode. Both of course happened in Africa one day after the other.

One day we were all enjoying a game drive and watching a young bull elephant flaunt his stuff when he suddenly decides to run at the vehicle. All in a panic, our driver was quickly trying to reverse the vehicle to get us out of harm’s way, but it stalled!

I think the screams of all six of us in the vehicle was all that deterred the bull calf, who quickly about-faced and ran the other way.

The following day, we were out and about again and truly felt we were in a David Attenborough episode with every animal we came across mating! There seemed to be a special something in the air that day!

And finally, what is the most amazing place you’ve been in the world?

Africa! I travelled there in 2016 and it certainly lived up to the hype. It really is a destination that gives you 'pinch me' moments. It is just so amazing to experience such diverse wildlife in their natural habitat.
