When romance and travel don’t mix

Romance and travel go together like gin and tonic. And sometimes it can be a bit more gin than anything else.

As the dreaded V Day approaches, all the hearts and schmaltz can make even the most loved up of us feel a little lovelorn. These stories will fix that.

Allianz Global Assistance has compiled some of the most unusual romance-related travel insurance claims from Aussie tourists (some covered and some not) over the past year and they prove that path or cruise to love never did run smooth.

WITH THIS RING, I THEE WED

A skiing holiday can be all kinds of romantic. Except if you’re this poor woman who fractured her wrist and then had her hand swell so much she needed to have her wedding and engagement rings cut off.

WITH THIS RING, I THEE FLUSH

Another woman made a claim after a family cruise left her without her engagement ring. After taking her ring off to have a shower, her mischievous son picked up her engagement ring and danced around with it on his finger. Unfortunately, he moved his hand too quickly and the ring flew straight into the open toilet! Panicking about getting into LOTS of trouble, he flushed the toilet to hide the evidence...and the engagement ring was never to be seen again.

WITH THIS RING, I — WAIT! WHERE’S THE RING?!

Whilst visiting his mother overseas to show off the beautiful engagement ring for his fiancé-to-be, a traveller decided to take a quick detour to a local shopping centre, with the ring in his backpack. Later in the day, he realised that an opportunistic thief had slashed open his backpack and the ring was gone...it never ended up on the finger of his bride-to-be.

HONEYMOON FOR ONE

Getting left at the alter is bad enough. But all the paperwork that follows is like a continual slap in the face. When one poor groom was jilted, he tried to recoup some of his money spent on a romantic honeymoon overseas. Imagine the telephone conversations and forms he’d have to fill in. Reason for claim: abandoned heart. Poor fella.

HONEYMOON IN HOSPITAL

A newly married couple had an unexpected delay to their honeymoon in Thailand. After a beautiful ceremony in New Zealand, the loved-up pair were waiting at the airport boarding gate, ready to depart, when suddenly, the bride suffered a severe allergic reaction and was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical treatment.
