Google Street View now inspires travellers with a ride on Sydney’s famous ferries

Now travellers anywhere in the world can travel some of Sydney’s famous ferry routes from anywhere in the world.

Ride a Sydney ferry to Manly from the comfort of home.

Dating back to the early European settlers, Sydney’s ferries are as iconic as the Harbour Bridge and Opera House not just as a service for commuters but as a tourist attraction in their own right.

The 20-minute trip between Circular Quay and Taronga Zoo or 35-minute journey past multimillion dollar harbourside mansions to Manly are well frequented by locals and travellers.

Now, thanks to Google Street View, a 360-degree idea of what a ride on the ferry is like can be enjoyed with just a few clicks, after two Sydney ferry services were added to the service’s virtual windows to the world.

The new service, put together in partnership with Transport for NSW and Transdev, allows people to get a feel for what it’s like to travel on the Taronga Zoo and Manly ferry services to and from Circular Quay from their homes.

The Manly ferry pulls up at the wharf.

In compiling the images needed to put together the virtual ferry ride, Google Street View technicians had to navigate inclement weather and sea motion to ensure cameras were positioned in an ideal location.

Transport for NSW Chief Operations Officer, Howard Collins, said he hoped the footage captured to put together the virtual reality experience would inspire more travellers to visit Sydney in person for a real-life ferry ride.

“These famous routes give viewers the full experience of travelling on an iconic Sydney ferry on the glistening Sydney Harbour on a sunny afternoon,” Collins said.

Sydney’s ferries are the latest in a line of quintessential Australian experiences to be available in virtual form through Google Street View since the service debuted in 2007.

Virtual reality experiences also available include diving with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef, crab migrations on Christmas Island, Kakadu National Park and a tour of the Sydney Opera House.
