A city of history and culture, Berlin intrigues those who are lucky enough to visit it. It seems there’s always something to do around the next corner; a cobbled alleyway or quiet restaurant waiting to be revealed.

The Reichstag

Politics is a complicated subject in any language, but for those with an interest in the topic, the Reichstag is the place to visit. Home to the German government, it's been the seat of major decisions since 1884. The building has a fascinating history, having endured a long period of disuse following a fire in 1933.

Fully restored following German reunification, it has some magnificent architectural features to admire, including its famous glass dome. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views across Berlin from inside, although tickets tend to be booked up quickly, so pre-registration ahead of time is heavily recommended.

Museum Island

If you’re a lover of history and culture, you must also add a stop at Museum Island to your itinerary. Located in the middle of the River Spree, this UNESCO World Heritage Site contains some of the finest museums in the world, handily clustered together.

These include the Altes Museum and Bode Museum, which host incredible artefacts from across the millennia. The former has a permanent exhibition on Ancient Worlds, which covers life in Ancient Greece and Rome, while the latter offers a fascinating look into the history of the natural world.

If walking around helps you work up an appetite, there are great places to eat close by. This is a good opportunity to try out your language skills with the locals, so it's smart to learn the basics beforehand, such as looking at how to ask the most common questions guides. With plenty of examples, these should outfit you with the essentials needed to strike up a conversation and place an order.

Berlin Cathedral

Also on Museum Island, you’ll find Berlin Cathedral. This glorious building dates back to 1454 and began as a Roman Catholic place of worship in the 15th century. Since then, it’s had numerous affiliations through its long and interesting history.

Whether or not you’re religious, this awe-inspiring building is worth a visit. An architectural feast, it's grand, glorious, and has a fascinating backstory to discover as you walk around. Be sure to spend plenty of time in the main building before descending to the crypts, where its incredible history waits to be uncovered.

For those in search of a cultural city break, Berlin is a perfect pick: chic, cosmopolitan, and full of unique and beautiful places for eager visitors to explore. Why not book your next trip today or consider one of these other underrated options? The world really is your oyster!
