The world’s most expensive sandwich revealed

It could have something to do with the gold leaf

A favourite of Bill Clinton and Beyonce, Serendipity 3 in New York has created the world’s most expensive sandwich.

At US$214 a pop, the sandwich is just your average grilled cheese, if your cheese is aged in special caves like the extremely rare Caciocavallo Podolico, if the bread is baked with Dom Perignon Champagne and brushed with edible gold-flecked truffle oil, and if the edges are covered in 24 carat gold leaf.

While many may claim that US$214 is a preposterous price for a sandwich (no matter how much gold leaf is used), one might be mollified by the fact that the sandwich is served with a simple tomato and lobster bisque, the Daily Mail reported.

But you can’t head to Serendipity 3 without stopping in for dessert, so the US$1,000 Golden Opulence Sundae should set you (though perhaps not your bank balance) right.

Both the sandwich and the sundae require 48 hours notice. After all, they’ve got to get that cheese out of the cave, don’t they?
