Times Square characters may face character probe

Is this a case of character assassination?

Elmo is anti-semitic and Super Mario likes a bit of a grope. This is what you might think if you based your understanding of the ticklish red puppet and once-pixelated gaming hero on recent behaviour of their Times Square incarnations.

For some, these costumed characters have become part of the Times Square colour, but for others they’ve become such a nuisance that a local politician has drafted a bill calling for the introduction of a licensing system and background checks on the people inside the costumes, the Wall Street Journal reported.

"I am particularly concerned adults are dressing up in kids character costumes and pretty much harassing or even begging for money to take a picture," City Councilman Andy King told the paper.
