Qatar Airways adds sports-themed transit tours for flyers with long layovers

Why burn mind-numbing hours sitting at the gate when you can head out and see Qatar while waiting for your next flight.

Check out five of Qatar's World Cup stadia during your layover in Doha.

Three new bite-size tours have been added to Qatar Airways’ selection of Transit Tours, designed for travellers to enjoy a small piece of Qatar while awaiting their connecting flight.

Fresh from hosting (perhaps controversially) the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November and December, travellers with eight hours or more to burn can venture out to visit five of the stadia used during the tournament before they are permanently disassembled.

The four-hour adventure priced from AUD$60 per person, whisks travellers around the outside of the Al Thumama, Education City, Khalifa International, Lusail Iconic Stadium and Stadium 974 – the latter built from 974 shipping containers – for a look at where some of the world’s best football took place late last year.

Guests will also learn more about how each venue will be repurposed, with each set to be donated to poorer nations as an upgrade to their own sporting facilities. Tours take place at 9am and 3pm, with travellers required to be in Hamad Airport two hours prior to the departure time.

Or hit the links virtually for a rapid fire round of golf.

Alternatively, for those with only four hours at their disposal, travellers can enjoy access to two different sport facilities at the Oryx Airport Hotel, located inside the terminal.

Choose from two hours of access to squash courts (for AU$25pp) or one hour of play on a golf simulator (from AU$33pp) at the hotel’s Vitality Wellbeing and Fitness Centre.

Departures for the two activities take place every two hours (and every hour for the golf simulator) from 7am to 9pm (or 10pm for golf) and include access to squash equipment rental or golf clubs as well as access to the fitness centre’s showers, to ensure you’re cleaned up for your next flight.

Tours can be booked on Qatar Airways’ website up to 48 hours before arrival in Qatar or at the Qatar Tourism Duty Free Plaza in the airport.

“We are delighted to help our transit passengers maintain their active lifestyle through our sports simulator sessions offered by Discover Qatar,” said Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker.

“Sports enthusiasts can also relive the excitement of the historic FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 by visiting Qatar’s iconic stadiums which hosted an unforgettable edition of the world’s most popular tournament,” Al Baker added.
