Thailand weddings: a guide for the bride

The Land of Smiles continues to be a popular destination for those keen to tie the knot in an exotic location. Here, we ask three expert Aussie wedding planners why Thailand is such a great option for both couples and their guests.

What makes Thailand a great destination for a wedding?

Thailand is the ultimate destination wedding location given how internationally accessible it is, its year round warm weather, spectacular natural landscapes and the smiling service culture of the wonderful Thai people.

Stylish, luxurious accommodation options are also plentiful, making Thailand the perfect spot to bring together a group for an extended celebration or to enjoy a decadent yet good value, relaxed honeymoon in diverse settings.

What kind of facilities are available?

The world-class resort and villa properties prevalent in Thailand provide the perfect venues for weddings and pre- and post-event celebrations.

Delicious gourmet Thai and international cuisine, extensive cocktail and wine lists, and outstanding ocean (or rice paddy) views are complemented with quality tropical flowers in abundance.

There are also relaxing pre- and post-event spa treatments, boating adventures and cultural outing options, and specialists such as DJs, hair and make-up artists and photographers to offer quality, personalised celebrations and holidays.

Is there a particular location you recommend to couples?

Our recommendations are very personalised and based on the weather at the time of year the function/holiday will be held, as well as the client?s past experience in Thailand, the setting they are after (beach/lawn/decking, etc) and the proximity to particular airports or locations.

Originally, most of our weddings were on Koh Samui with a real beach focus, however more recently we've had an increased number of requests for decking or lawn with ocean views, often on Phuket due to direct flight options and beautiful off-beach venues.

We're very excited about an upcoming wedding in Chiang Mai overlooking rice fields and have had fabulous events previously in Krabi, maximising the stunning landscapes in the region for wedding set ups and views.

What services do you offer clients?

As well as end-to-end event management with more than 14 years of experience planning memorable, relaxed, quality weddings in Thailand at the best value, we also assist all guests individually with handpicked, discounted accommodation.

We also set up a personalised wedding website that sends out ?Save the Dates? to guests, allows them to RSVP, learn about the couple?s plans, book flights/accommodation and share photos. We provide a single contact point for all planning and payments.

What memories will couples take away from Thailand?

Past clients have loved the fact that a destination wedding in Thailand is an extended celebration, so they get to enjoy multiple gatherings with friends and family rather than just the one evening. They love the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of having all those closest to them together, in awarm, relaxed place where everyone can have fun and celebrate the special event. Often guests at our weddings contact us year after year to return to Thailand again!

What makes Thailand a great destination for a wedding?

With weddings being so expensive in Australia, having a destination wedding has a lot of advantages; it can be cheaper with something for all budgets, offers picturesque locations and gives the bride, groom and the guests a fabulous holiday.

Thailand is also easy to get to, has stunning beaches and resorts that can accommodate everyone, a rich culture, plus amazing service and food.

What kind of facilities are available?

Through Thai the Knot Weddings we provide recommendations on resorts to best fit the couples ?wish list?. Most ceremonies are around 50 people, but bigger or smaller is no problem.

Couples and their guests will enjoy all the resort facilities, plus I can organise special activities such as a welcome cocktail party, special dinners, the hen?s party and day tours. For the bride and groom, they are also likely to receive complimentary treats like champagne and massages.

Is there a particular location you recommend to couples?

Wedding and honeymoon couples tend to gravitate towards popular beach areas such as Phuket, Koh Samui, Phi Phi Island and Krabi.

What services do you offer clients?

Through Thai the Knot Weddings, we can offer exclusive, all-inclusive wedding packages. For example, our most popular package at the Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa is only $7,500 for up to 50 guests.

The package includes the ceremony, celebrant, bouquet, buttonhole, pre-cocktail and canapé hour, reception dinner, plus a three-hour bar package including local beer and spirits. It?s everything a couple needs for a stress-free wedding.

What memories will couples take away from Thailand?

I have no doubt that a destination wedding in Thailand will exceed all expectations and spending a week away with family and friends will bring everyone closer together. The feedback from my brides is always that it was the best day and more magical than they could ever have imagined.

What makes Thailand a great destination for a wedding?

No other major holiday destination in the Asia Pacific region offers such accessibility. Another huge draw card, besides the glorious sunshine, is how well established the wedding industry is in Thailand.

From cake makers to caterers, wedding venues to photographers and DJ?s, Thailand has naturally developed a community of very highly skilled wedding professionals. Today, the sky really is the limit when it comes to putting on a wedding event here. Literally anything is possible.

Price is always a factor and the other great thing about the country is that there is a wedding package to suit any budget.

What kind of facilities are available?

Lots of resorts and exclusive villas have turned their attention to weddings, offering jaw-dropping locations and the necessary amenities to hold an impressive event. Most Thai resorts are extremely well facilitated and what is not on hand can be brought in with relative ease.

Often when it comes to things like photography and styling however, brides may wish to use third party specialists from outside the hotel chain. Many such professionals have reputations that extend way beyond the borders of Thailand and as such are in great demand.

Thailand and its islands are littered with stunning beaches and amazing cliff-side venues. For newlyweds in search of romance, there are venues and resorts off the beaten track, where it is easy to relax and enjoy each other?s company, away for the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas.

Is there a particular location you recommend to couples?

With so many great locations it?s very hard to recommend one particular part of Thailand for a wedding or honeymoon. The question is further complicated by budget and what the couple want.

That said, of course, Phuket and Koh Samui are by far the most popular destinations in Thailand for weddings. Generally speaking, you will get more bang for your buck on the gorgeous island of Koh Samui, especially with the popularity that many Phuket resorts now exploit.

In complete contradiction to the previous statement however, is one of our favourite venues in the world. The Cape Panwa Hotel in Phuket. This beautiful location on the southern tip of the island is bursting with character and includes a private beach and countless locations to perform both ceremony and reception. In our opinion, this venue is massively under priced... but don?t tell Cape Panwa that!

For five-star luxury, we often turn to Koh Samui, where venues such as the Intercontinental and Silavadee Resort present outstanding value and memorable locations. Villa weddings are also popular, though they can be more expensive. One more affordable option who we work closely with is the Kya Beach House.

What services do you offer clients?

We have been planning weddings in Thailand for more than 15 years and having been there and seen it all, we have unparalleled knowledge of the process.

We have a team of professionals on the ground that we have been working with from the start. They know us and we know them, so nothing ever gets lost in translation. This is a critical factor when planning any overseas wedding.

With our knowledge and hundreds of happy weddings in Thailand comes our reputation to always deliver the best day of our couples? life. Trust works both ways and most major venues in Thailand are as comfortable working with us as their own local teams.

We have a full service, in-house travel agency which is part of the HelloWorld chain so we also assist our wedding couples with full travel and guest coordination, negotiating group rates and the best deals for their guests. We provide them with a wedding website and handle their save the dates.

For brides located in Australia, the convenience and peace of mind felt in dealing with a Melbourne-based office is non-negotiable. Add to this our passion for Thailand and the weddings we arrange there and it?s easy to see why we are the biggest destination wedding coordinators in the Southern Hemisphere.

What memories will couples take away from Thailand?

Memories of the wedding are in fact just a small part of the overall experience. The bringing together of family and friends and spending quality time challenges the displaced couple of hours a traditional local wedding offers.
