A guide to getting around Rottnest Island

The perfect accompaniment to a visit to Perth, Rottnest Island can be done in one day or many, and getting around the gorgeous island is part of its appeal, writes DEBBIE SPROULE.

After a day of pampering at Karma Resort’s Karma Spa and Apothecary massage bar, we thought it was time to see the sights.

On past visits, we’ve hired bikes and cycled around the island, but this time we spent $20 each on a hop on/off bus tour and set out to walk and bus around. It turned out to be a good plan.

We found that by walking we stopped more often and took in every bit of the stunning scenery. The bonus was getting exercise at the same time.

We discovered bays we hadn’t seen before and saw the seal sanctuary at Cathedral Rocks for the first time. The different colour blues of the Indian Ocean were so vivid and picturesque.

My favourite beaches for swimming were Little Salmon, Salmon, Parakeet and Geordie Bay.

The day flew by, but we found we had just enough time for a late lunch at Geordie’s café then back to pick up our bags before meeting the 4.30pm fast ferry.

Some of the many activities on Rottnest, apart from biking, include the 9-hole Karma Rottnest golf course, Segway tour, train, gun and tunnel tour, scenic flights, family fun park, just 4 fun aqua park plus plenty of other scenic tours and walks.
