Accor will soon open its first ‘airport resort’ in Darwin

We’ve all heard of airport hotels, but the Top End is taking a bit more of a holiday vibe to the concept with its newest hotel.

Accor will combine its Novotel and Mercure properties to create a mega-resort in Darwin.

An Olympic-plus size swimming pool and an Indigenous training academy are just two of the impressive features of Australia’s first $30 million airport resort.

Novotel and Mercure Darwin Airport Resort will become the perfect base for touring the Northern Territory’s Top End following a reimagination and integration of the hotels, which currently sit next to each other.

The hotels are owned by the Airport Development Group (ADG), which also owns Darwin Airport.

The resort is located on the lands of the Larrakia Nation, the traditional custodians of the greater Darwin area. Indigenous engagement is an integral component of the hotels’ redesign.

A priority of the hotel operation is to employ as many Indigenous staff as possible. An Indigenous Training Academy has been set up to deliver nationally recognised qualifications in the hospitality and tourism sectors.

The combined property will feature 423 rooms and suites.

Along with one of the largest city pools in Australia, the new combined 423-room property offers family suites, five-star villas with their own plunge pools, a children’s playground, poolside cabanas and dining options.

“The new resort is enriched with Aboriginal art and themes, inside and out, providing an appropriate reminder that this pioneering world-class resort is on the lands of the world’s longest-surviving culture,” said Darwin Airport Resort General Manager, Chris Chaffe.

The resort is a 15-minute drive to the city centre and just over an hour’s drive to Litchfield National Park, one of the Top End’s most popular attractions. It is also very convenient for flights to Territory destinations such as the Tiwi Islands, Katherine, Kakadu and West Arnhem.

There are special opening packages currently available. A ‘couples retreat’ offer includes overnight accommodation in a tropical pool villa and starts from $449 per night.

There’s also a ‘family getaway’ deal offering 25 per cent off the standard rate and starts at $250 per night. Both offers are valid until March 28, 2024.
