Opening a new hotel can be difficult at the best of times, opening one on the back of COVID-19 is considerably harder.

Traveltalk chats to Crowne Plaza Sydney Darling Harbour GM Eugéne Human and finds out how hotels will have to balance the value of human interaction with new post-coronavirus expectations.

 

Where was the last place you travelled?    

New Zealand - we took a road trip from the South Island up to the North Island - definitely recommend it when it’s possible to do so again.  

 

 

Besides your passport, what’s one thing you never travel without?

My family – seeing the world through the eyes of your kids changes everything. If we experienced life through the eyes of a child, everything would be magical and extraordinary. 

 

Why did you take up the role at Crowne Plaza Sydney Darling Harbour?  

Crowne Plaza Sydney Darling Harbour is an incredible new build hotel that has truly considered how we live, travel and work today.

The sophisticated and future-focused design challenges the perception of the traditional corporate hotel and aims to seamlessly blend the 9-5, 5-9 day. I couldn’t go past the opportunity to build this from the ground up. 

 

Tell us something people might not know about this property/group?

I believe people will be surprised at how connected they will feel at Crowne Plaza Sydney Darling Harbour.

COVID19 has certainly added a new layer of expectation when it comes to operating a hotel in this new environment, and we have been in a unique position to enhance our technology, services and offering in advance of opening to meet the new expectations.

However, we have also been very conscious that we do not want to lose that human connection in what we do.

By blending the thoughtful design elements including Chromecast in all guestrooms, USB and wireless charging ports in the lobby, restaurants and bars, digital ordering and communication technology for room service and events with our Dare-to-Connect service culture, we keep our commitment to being one of Sydney’s most connected hotels.

 

What makes a successful hotel?

The team! Without the right support - be it from the hotel team, the owner’s or our corporate IHG team - the hotel will be just another building in the city. Being able to bring a vision to life you need to rely on everyone's experience, input and support to ensure the hotel succeeds. 

 

What’s your top travel tip?

I think this has changed a bit since having kids... Before kids I would have said be open-minded and don’t be afraid of trying new things, don’t plan too much and immerse yourself in the local culture.  Get lost you will discover so much more! 

With kids - plan, prepare, plan, prepare, stick to the schedule.
