Fresh Faces: Melbourne Marriott GM Gaurav Wattal

What’s the special place in the Melbourne Marriott that people may not know about? The hotel’s new general manager GAURAV WATTAL, shares this and more with Traveltalk.

Where is the last place you travelled?

The last place I travelled to was Bangkok, Thailand. What I really liked about the city was its mix of old and new.

Marriott also has some fantastic hotels there with fabulous restaurants and bars, which I could recommend.

Marriott’s travel program, Marriott Bonvoy, has a curated list of unique dining experiences called ‘Top 52 Restaurants and Bars by Marriott Bonvoy’. Yao Rooftop Bar on the top floor of Bangkok Marriott Hotel and A Bar at the Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen's Park are both on this list and offer beautiful views of Thailand’s capital.

Where are you going next?

I haven’t explored enough of Australia, and Tasmania is definitely on the cards. The destination is doing a great job with its food and beverage scene, showcasing its high quality cheese, wines, chocolate and spirits.

The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts will actually make its debut in Tasmania next year with the launch of The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart.

Besides your passport, what’s one thing you always take with you on your travels?

I always take my iPhone with me when travelling. It has my music on there, and a great camera meaning I can take lots of pics of food, drinks and interesting places – which I like to share on my Instagram account.

Why did you move to this role?

I have spent nine years with Marriott International, and the company has provided me with some wonderful opportunities.

After my tenure as the Director of Food and Beverage in the Indian cities of Bengaluru and Panjim, I took on the challenge of becoming the Director of Operations in Mumbai before transferring to Sydney as Director of Operations at Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel.

The next step for me was to take on my own hotel. I am now proudly the General Manager at Melbourne Marriott Hotel – a fabulous assignment with our owning company, YTL Hotels.

Tell us something people might not know about the hotel?

Something that you might not know about Melbourne Marriott Hotel is that we have a lovely terrace garden with an antique fountain and garden benches. This is the ideal spot for our guests to relax or reflect when retreating from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne’s CBD.

What’s the main thing people should know about the Melbourne Marriott?

At Melbourne Marriott Hotel, our success lies with our fantastic associates and their passion for ensuring our guests are well-looked after and enjoy exceptional experiences with us during their stay. It’s inspiring, and is something Marriott prides itself on throughout each of its hotels around the world.

What’s your top travel tip?

My top travel tip is to go local! Explore the city as a local would – that’s the best way to enjoy the food, drinks and culture of a city.
