Khao Lak on the rebound

A decade after the tsunami devastated the holiday town of Khao Lak in southern Thailand, finally some good news for locals.

Major extensions have been completed to the popular Sensimar Khao Lak Beachfront Resort adding 76 deluxe rooms. The addition of the four-star rooms and a new swimming pool will mean the resort now has a total of 231 rooms and four swimming pools.

Resort manager Ciaran McNeill said that the need for extensions indicated that Khao Lak was well and truly back on the tourist map.

"The beachfront aspect of the property with a mix of indoor and outdoor dining options adjacent to the water had encouraged an increased return-visitor ratio prompting the need for the expansion of facilities,” he said.

Sensimar is a 75-minute drive from Phuket International Airport and a five-minute walk from the town's extensive choice of shopping, wining and dining opportunities. Room rates start at $128 per room including breakfast from May to October. If you book 90 days in advance, the room rate with breakfast starts at $81.
