Marriott enters home rental market


Hotel giant takes on Airbnb in big new product

Move over Airbnb. One of the world’s biggest hotel groups, Marriott International, has moved into the home rental market. 

 

 

Homes & Villas by Marriott International is a new product that sees the American hotel giant offer over 2,000 premium and luxury homes in more than 100 destinations across the US, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.

 

Launching next week, the new service was developed following a 2018 European pilot, in which participants, three quarters of whom were leisure travellers, booked average stays of more than triple the typical hotel stay. 

 

Nearly 90% of those that booked accommodation during the pilot were also members of the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, who will be able to earn and redeem points in the new Homes & Villas service.

 

“The launch of Homes & Villas by Marriott International reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation as consumer travel needs evolve,” Marriott International Global Chief Commercial Officer Stephanie Linnartz said. 

 

“What started out as a pilot a year ago is now a global offering, providing our guests with the space and amenities of a home backed by a trusted travel company, and the very best in loyalty benefits.”

 

With the new offering, Marriott will add nearly 40 new leisure destinations for customers, including Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast (Italy), North Lake Tahoe, California, and St. Barts in the Caribbean. 

 

Examples of homes include:

– A four-bedroom cottage on six private acres of California wine country.

– An oceanfront villa in Anguilla with private beach and a personal butler and house staff.

– A 18th century Irish Castle that sleeps 17 and features a private lake for boating and fishing.

 

Marriott says it expects to enter further markets with the product, as well as increase the number of homes in existing destinations.

 

“By working with a select group of professional management companies that understand and operate in this dynamic landscape, we are able to focus on what we do best – selecting a breadth of homes in inspiring destinations, setting standards for responsive service and designing a seamless booking experience that helps our guests navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain set of home rental choices,” Homes & Villas by Marriott International Vice President Jennifer Hsieh said.

 

Travellers will be able to book the product through www.homesandvillasbymarriott.com from next week.
