Property review: Hotel U Hrabenky, Czech Republic

Big hotels are for big cities but thankfully you won’t find them in towns like the impossibly pretty Telc in the Czech Republic’s highland region of Vysocina.

Bird's eye view of Telc, Czech Republic

Here, among the centuries-old townhouses, cobbled streets and castles, it’s charming properties like the Hotel U Hrabenky where travellers lay their heads, weary from days exploring the region’s UNESCO world heritage-listed pilgrimage church, the Zelena Hora, plus the myriad chateaus, monasteries, breweries and castles.

It’s a short walk from the historic town square and like much of Telc, the four-star hotel has a long history. Built in the 1700s, its warm interiors are akin to a ski chalet with wooden beams and panelling a feature throughout.

In total there are just 17 rooms including one superior double room with a Jacuzzi for two arranged around a central courtyard. Although quaint, the rooms are homely with their clay floors, high-pitched ceiling, exposed rafters and crisp white bedding. All have TVs, a minibar and free Wi-Fi, and room service is available 24 hours.

The alpine feel continues in the downstairs restaurant and bar where a central open fireplace holds price of place. Here, a European continental breakfast is served each morning and features cheeses, freshly baked breads and preserves. Alternatively, pop in at lunch or dinner and you’ll dine a la carte on an appetising range of traditional Czech dishes.

During Vysocina’s mild summers visitors can relax in one of two landscaped terraces, or head to the Sauna and hot tub in the wellness area when the weather is more wild.

Strangely, there are even two fully automated bowling lanes on the property, open to not just hotel guests, but to anyone who fancies skittling a pin or 10.

But it’s the quirks that make properties like these so attractive, and add to Telc’s irresistible 16th century charm.
