Where hotel dining is at its most expensive

Club Sandwich Index reveals priciest cities in which to dine in your hotel

There are times when hotel dining raises the concept of a simple meal to an art form – and then there are the times when you’re served cold chips and canned soup (after paying a small fortune) and wonder what you’ve done with your life to end up in a so hopelessly pathetic predicament.

Regardless of quality, hotel dining is often the domain of busy travellers unable to scour a new city for its tastiest bites, an inevitable last resort for the tired and time poor.

So in which city can travellers expect to pay the most for the convenience of dining in their hotels?

According to the newly released Hotels.com annual Club Sandwich Index (CSI), which reveals the costs associated with dining at hotels across the globe, Geneva is not only the priciest city for a club sandwich (US$30.59), but the Swiss city has also topped the charts as the most expensive destination to enjoy a full day hotel dining experience at US$86.71.

The CSI incorporates the average prices of four main dining options available at three-, four- and five-star hotel properties, including: a burger meal (burger, fries and softdrink) for lunch, a cup of coffee, a club sandwich and a glass of house red wine for dinner.

Based on findings from the CSI, Sydney is the fourteenth most expensive destination to enjoy a full day of meals with an average price of US$51.

Hotel guests in South Korea pay the most to get their caffeine fix (US$9.72), while guests at 5-star hotels in Paris pay more for a glass of house red wine (US$23.03) than a club sandwich in 19 other cities, including New York, Dublin, Sydney and Berlin.
