An elderly WA man got a longer stay in Bali than he would have liked, after a series of misfortunes befell the Perth grandfather.
Alan Conway initially had a fall, which now requires him to have a hip replacement.
He then developed a viral rash that has made the procedure more dangerous. Then the 84-year-old had a stroke, PerthNow reported.
To make matters worse, his advanced age has left Mr Conway and his family, who just want to fly him home, few options through insurance.
“His medical is only to the value of $40,000 and I do believe a medivac can get quite expensive, up to $100,000,” his son Marc told 7 News Perth.
Conway’s insurer, Fastcover has confirmed an air ambulance is on standby to bring him back to Australia. But facing the possibility of an extremely costly mercy flight home, the Conway family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money.
Travel Insurance Direct’s Phil Sylvester said the case flagged the need for travellers to pick the right insurance.
“If you don't have medical emergency and medical evacuation coverage for at least a million dollars, I would say that that policy is not worth the paper it's written on,” he said.
