Australian traveller dies after Pattaya bar brawl

Aussie reportedly acted aggressively to staff just before incident

Pattaya City

An Australian man has died from injuries received during a drunken fight in a bar in southern Thailand.

A US national, who initially fled the scene, has since surrendered himself to authorities for his part in the brawl, which occurred at the Ruby Club in Pattaya on Friday night.

According to AAP, reports suggest that Victorian Benjamin Robb had been acting aggressively towards the American and other staff at the bar just before the fight, in which the Australian sustained major injuries to his head and body before passing out.

Thai paramedics and police responded quickly to the incident, which saw Mr Robb taken to nearby Pattaya Memorial Hospital, AAP reported. But Robb, 43, died from his injuries early on Saturday. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed his death.

Witnesses said both men appeared heavily intoxicated when the brawl broke out.

A statement issued by The Ruby Club said the fracas had been brief.

The unnamed American will be held for at least 10 days before appearing in court.
