Bali still tops, despite recent turbulence

It seems you can’t keep a good destination down

It’s been a challenging year for Bali: volcanic eruptions wreaked havoc with flights; visa-free travel for Aussies fell through (twice); new (and unpopular) cohabitation laws were proposed; while fallout from the Bali Nine executions also threatened to put a dampener on travel to the Indonesian province.

Despite this, Bali remains the most popular destination for overseas-bound Australians this summer, according to a study by TripAdvisor.

In the Summer Holiday Value Report, Bali beat out nine other highly visited international destinations in overall popularity, while easily coming out on top as the best value destination for the summer travel period (1 December 2015 to 29 February 2016).

While beach destinations proved most popular in the study, city getaways also faired well, with the popularity of Hong Kong particularly impressive.

The report also revealed the week starting 30 November as the least expensive week to travel over the three months.

“The cost of summer holidays can add up as people are travelling further afield in search of a beach or city break, but a summer trip doesn’t have to break the bank,” TripAdvisor communications director, Asia Pacific, Janice Lee Fang said.
