Fresh Faces: Chimu national sales manager Ben Goschnick

What differentiates a travel agency from the internet, particularly when it comes to booking off-the-beaten-path spots? New Chimu Adventures national sales manager BEN GOSCHNICK tells us, as well as the key to a successful tour operator.

Where is the last place you travelled and where are you going next?

I just returned from my honeymoon to the Pacific Coast of Mexico - Puerto Escondido and Puerto Vallarta in December last year.

I’m counting down four more weeks until I get to experience Antarctica for the first time!

Needless to say, this upcoming Antarctica trip has kind of over shadowed my honeymoon for the past six months. The excitement overload is next level!

Besides your passport, what’s one thing you always take with you on your travels?

A Lonely Planet, borrowed from my local library.

Why did you take up the role at Chimu?

I love adventure travel, I love travelling in Latin America, and I believe it is tailor made packages - designed by experts in the destination - that will be what differentiates a travel agency from the internet, particularly when it comes to booking clients to lesser known destinations like the polar regions and Latin America.

Tell us something people might not know about the company?

Chimu has helped raise close to $1 million in funds towards purpose related activities in the past 15 years, for example through microfinancing projects and donations.

What makes a really successful tour operator?

One that is passionate, innovative and cares for the communities and the environments they send travellers to.

What’s your top travel tip?

Be organised! Book as far in advance as possible, particularly for peak travel seasons. Use an expert travel agent and have as much booked as possible before you depart.

There’s nothing worse than researching a destination while you’re in it. That’s valuable time wasted and with the internet these days, all the great restaurants and experiences book out months in advance.
