FRESH FACES: Tourism Ireland’s David McMahon

Get to know the new Trade Marketing and Operations Executive for Tourism Ireland Australia and New Zealand.

From promoting the islands of Fiji for 7½ years to now promoting the island of Ireland, David will be spearheading activities to engage with travel advisors across Australia and New Zealand, keeping them updated with relevant news, tours, experiences and events that will help them position and sell Ireland better.

“I am really excited to be promoting all of the incredible experiences that Ireland has to offer, including the natural warmth of the Irish people which makes it a truly must-visit destination,” David said.

Here, Traveltalk sits down with David to get to know him, and Ireland, a little better.

What was your first ever job and what lesson did you take from it?

First job was in a busy pizza and pasta chain restaurant. I learnt early on that hard work pays off, whatever you do.

What advice would you give someone wanting to work in tourism right now?

I think for any industry, you have to have a passion for it. I realised this early on and have been lucky to find jobs that I love.

What’s the first thing you do/see/eat when you visit Ireland (once you’ve recovered from jetlag of course)?

For me it’s the seafood. Think oysters, fish and chips, mussels and some of the best smoked salmon in the world!

What do you wish more people knew about Ireland?

I think people are often surprised with just how good the food and drink are. There’s much more to Ireland’s food and drink than potatoes and whiskey. There is a thriving food scene with plenty of food tours and trails.
