How travelling with Intrepid helps underprivileged communities around the world

Every traveller booked with the company contributes to various humanitarian efforts of different scale around the world.

The February earthquake in Turkiye and Syria left nearly 60,000 dead.

Out of the devastation of February’s horrific earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria comes some wonderful news from Intrepid Travel, with its recent Türkiye and Syria Earthquake Appeal raising more than $308,000 to help those affected by the disaster.

Nearly 60,000 people are believed to have been killed across both countries by the three earthquakes that hit the regions in February.

According to UNICEF, the tragedy has also left more than 850,000 children displaced after being forced from their homes.

The money raised by the Intrepid Foundation (the not-for-profit entity of Intrepid Travel) brings the total charity donations made by the organisation to more than $12 million since it was founded in 1999.

The Intrepid Foundation was set up with the aim to create a positive impact in communities they visit, empowering guests to deepen their economic, social and environmental support through donations, awareness and traveller education.

Since 2002, The Intrepid Foundation has supported more than 130 organisations across the world. These include empowering women in Honduras with small loans to start their own businesses and become self-sufficient and providing a safe space for refugee and migrant women and children in Greece.

The Intrepid Foundation assists with efforts including reforestation work.

In Nepal, the Foundation has supported reforestation projects and given work to local communities, while the Forget Me Not charity aims to stop orphanage trafficking.

At home, the organisation works with the Blue Carbon Lab to restore and protect blue carbon in Australia’s coastal wetlands to help mitigate climate change.

This year the Foundation is adding 22 new nongovernmental organisation (NGO) partners to increase its number of charity projects to 36.

These projects will now span every continent and cover issues that include conservation and wildlife, gender equality, human rights, youth empowerment, climate action, economic development and emergency appeals.

One of the new partnerships is with Greening Australia, who support native wildlife, increase biodiversity, improve water quality and sequester carbon on a massive scale.

In addition to the new partnerships, Intrepid has committed to making an ongoing donation on behalf of every Intrepid traveller on every trip as of January 1. This will result in more than $700,000 donated from Intrepid Travel to NGO partners and contribute significantly to their $2 million annual donation target in 2023.
