As road trips come into focus as a safe way of travelling during the coronavirus pandemic, new research has revealed the car brands that tourists hire most around the world.
Looking at rental data for 109 countries between 2014 and 2020, DiscoverCars.com found that Toyota and Volkswagen were the most popular vehicles globally, with each brand topping car hires in 20 countries.
Among the nations where Toyotas are most prevalent are the US, Canada, South Africa and Thailand. In New Zealand, with whom Australia has just commenced a travel bubble, Toyota also rules.
Volkswagen is most loved across Europe, though it also tops rentals in such places as Mexico and Colombia.
In equal third on the list, Hyundai is most popular in Australia, parts of east and west Asia, and Central America, while Kia is king in large parts of the Middle East and the Caribbean. Both South Korean brands rule the rental roost in 10 nations.
French car Renault came in fifth, most popular in nine nations.
“We wanted to see just how popular specific brands of vehicles are across the map, and we’re pleased to see such a variety,” DiscoverCars.com Aleksandrs Buraks.
“We like to think this data will perhaps encourage people to choose their rental car more confidently, and maybe branch out and try a new type of vehicle.”
The Toyota Corolla, VW Polo, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10 and Accent, and Renault Logan and Twingo were among the specific models identified as most popular throughout the world.
