Taxi drivers in Paris are in the spotlight after a couple were charged nearly 250 euros (AU$400) for a trip from Charles de Gaulle airport to the city, a trip that should have cost just 50 to 55 euros - the fixed price in an official Paris cab.
In a video that has gone viral on Youtube, the two Thai tourists can be seen questioning the fare and refusing to pay, The Independent reported.
“Taxi in Paris is not fixed price – it’s by meter,” the driver says in the video, before showing them an app on his phone that reads “247”.
After suggesting they go to the police to sort it out, the driver becomes agitated.
“It’s not my car, it’s the company, you understand?”
“I’m not going to police. You pay me, you go to police. What is your problem?” he says
After relenting, the tourists offer to pay the driver twice the normal fare, 100 euros, but he refuses, calling them “crazy”.
He then takes them for a ride, during which the scared couple call emergency services to report the incident.
They eventually paid the driver 200 euros so they could get out of the vehicle.
