It’s hard to imagine a major airport goes a day without losing at least one item of luggage. So for a busy hub to go over 20 years without misplacing a single piece of baggage… well, that borders on the unbelievable.
So which facility can lay claim to this most exceptional of records? Rather unsurprisingly, the airport is in uber-organised Japan – and the hub is Kansai International Airport.
Located near Japan’s second largest city, Osaka, Kansai was recently given the gong for best baggage delivery at the World Airport Awards, beating Hong Kong International and Singapore Changi to the top prize.
Kansai, whose airport code is KIX, was praised at the awards for the short time it takes for passengers to receive their luggage after they deplane, and for its attention to detail as shown in its custom of placing suitcases on carousels with their handles facing outwards, making it easier for travellers to collect their luggage.

But the hub’s success goes beyond being just popular among fliers, 13 million of whom vote for the awards; operator, New Kansai International Airport Co, says it hasn’t lost any luggage at all since it opened in 1994, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported.
Cementing Japan’s place as the best in the baggage business, Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports also both finished in the top ten for luggage delivery.
KIX, which was built on a man-made island in Osaka Bay, was also voted the world’s best facility for low-cost carriers, among the top four cleanest airports in the world, in the top five for airport dining and security, and the top ten for leisure amenities, airport staff and immigration.
No Australian airports made the top ten for best baggage delivery.
