The surprising next big holiday hotspots for Aussies

Perth up, Bali most booked, but this region has seen the biggest growth

Countries in the Subcontinent have dominated a list of the top trending destinations among Australian travellers.

Travel site KAYAK.com.au analysed Australian flight search booking data over the past year and found that eight of the top 15 fastest growing destinations, in terms of interest, were located in the South Asian nations of India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Ahmedabad, India

Topping the list of top trending destinations was Ahmedabad (India), which saw growth in search volume of 124%.

Following the Gujarati city was Lahore (Pakistan, +90%), Kathmandu (Nepal, +76%), Kochi (India, +71%) and Karachi (Pakistan, 65%).

Outside of the Subcontinent, Tokyo (Japan, +60%) also saw big growth as did Dubai (UAE, +57%). The only non-Asian city to make the list was Johannesburg, South Africa, which experienced impressive 48% growth.

Whilst some of this growth could be put down to a possible increase in VFR (visiting friends and relatives), KAYAK believes Australian holiday-goers could simply be trading in overcrowded tourist locales for new off-the-beaten-track destinations.

“With easier access to travel than ever before, the search results show Aussie travellers are giving greater consideration to destinations and cultures that are completely new holiday experiences,” KAYAK APAC Global Hotels & Affiliates managing director Hichame Assi said.

“We look forward to seeing how this interest in new destinations translates into bookings into 2020 and beyond.”

The top trending local destinations were Perth (+34%), Maroochydore (+33%), Darwin (+28%), Coolangatta (+22%) and Brisbane (14%).

When it comes to the most booked destinations, Australian favourite Bali still tops the list followed by Melbourne, London, Sydney and New Delhi.
