Road trips (almost) anywhere can be a whole lot of fun, be they with friends, family or even workmates. But some countries have proven to be better than others when it comes to hitting the road for a vacation.
In its Global Road Trip Index 2019, UK car insurer Veygo by Admiral ranked the cheapest, safest and most scenic nations for driving holidays, taking into account car hire, fuel and accommodation costs (for two weeks), road safety (based on fatalities per 100,000 people) and ‘Instagrammability’.
Ranking over 40 of the world’s most economically developed countries, the index found Italy to be the best place overall in which to take a road trip.
Highly photogenic and safe for drivers, the southern European nation beat the USA, Japan, Spain and Canada to the top prize.
Known for its wide open roads and incredible natural landscapes, Australia finished in sixth spot, just ahead of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Germany, France and Mexico.
When it comes to individual honours, Eastern European nations were revealed to be the cheapest road trip spots (lead by Latvia, Lithuania and Turkey), Central and Northern European countries the safest (led by Norway, Switzerland and Sweden), and Japan the most Insta-worthy (ahead of Italy and USA).
