Three not-to-be-missed A&K adventures

The connoisseurs of luxury travel at Abercrombie & Kent (A&K) define adventure by the level of enrichment and personalisation contained in a journey to an often exotic destination.

It is a style of travel A&K knows well. In the early 1960s the company pioneered photographic safaris through rugged and remote parts of Africa and has been delivering handcrafted journeys to extraordinary places ever since. Today the spread has broadened to all seven continents.

Through its network of more than 50 offices in more than 30 countries, the skilled specialists at A&K have an intimate understanding of what makes an adventure great.

For some it is the chance to push physical limits, scale high peaks or challenge nature’s waterways.

For others, it is interacting with an unfamiliar culture and speaking a foreign tongue. It might be savouring a new cuisine or seeking out wild animals in their natural habitat.

Whatever the motivation, if it educates, takes travellers beyond their comfort zone and is life enhancing, that is an adventure.

A&K has a broad range of enriching adventures which challenge physically and culturally, a selection feature below.

Gorilla tracking

Gorilla tracking is one of the most outstanding wildlife experiences available to adventurous travellers.

With an existing office in Uganda and a newly established operation in Rwanda, the company co-ordinates programs in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, and Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans, both areas which shelter some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas.

In small groups, guests hike through rugged jungle terrain in search of the gorilla families and spend time observing these extraordinary primates in their own habitat – one of life’s most humbling encounters.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is another of A&K’s more adventurous challenges ticking all the boxes for intrepid travellers.

At 5,895 metres, the mountain stands at the border between Kenya and Tanzania, its snow-capped peak visible for several kilometres. The A&K climb is a private expedition following the Machame Route.

No prior mountaineering experience is required and safety is paramount, each party accompanied by a professional guide and porters who are endorsed by the International Porter Protection Group.

Mountain and communication equipment is included plus membership to the Flying Doctor’s Service. Oxygen bottles, portable altitude chambers and rescue fees are also part of the package, leaving nothing to chance.

West Africa

West Africa

Offering cultural adventure, A&K’s small group journey to West Africa reveals three fascinating countries in a still largely untravelled part of the continent.

Ghana, Togo and Benin are home to some of the world’s most welcoming people and have long and intriguing histories. On this adventure, A&K travellers will observe a voodoo healing ceremony, see traditional witch doctors at work, watch a local trance dance and be on the sideline of an enthralling funeral ceremony.

Other adventures from A&K include polar expeditions, trekking in the high Himalaya, walks through Puglia, cultural journeys in Iran and Central Asia and the unique Golden Eagle Festival in Mongolia, which occurs only once a year.
