European destinations have dominated Hostelworld’s top 19 destinations for 2019, but domestic travel is proving its pulling power by also figuring highly on the list.
Basing its rankings on 2018 booking data, the hostel reservations platform forecast Italy and Spain to be the most popular travel spots for Aussies in 2019.
But with the biggest year-on-year increase (+16%) among any nation occurring locally, Australia finished third on the travel list, above England, USA and Germany.
“We love that Aussies are showing such a growing interest in exploring their own country, a trend we expect to continue into 2019,” Hostelworld Director of Strategy and Planning Catriona Flood said.
“Australia offers gorgeous landscapes, plenty of opportunities for adventure and comfortable, world-renowned hostels.”
Jumping from fifth to third place on the Aussie traveller list, Australia also remains a favourite among international holidaymakers, moving up one position from sixth to fifth place on the global list.
When it comes to the most trending cities worldwide, Melbourne (2nd, +21%), Byron Bay (3rd, +19%) and Sydney (5th, +13%) all fared extremely well, with Istanbul (+62%) and Porto (+16%) the only big movers internationally.
