Top 20 budget destinations for Aussies in 2020

Southeast Asia and southern Europe have dominated a list of the top travel spots for Australians to visit on a shoestring next year.

Based on its 2019 booking data, hostel-focused travel site Hostelworld named Siargao Island as the number one “key destination” for Aussies in 2020.

Siargao, Philippines

Experiencing triple digit growth (109%) over the past 12 months, the Philippines’ surfing capital edged La Spezia (Italy), Phong Nha (Vietnam), Shkoder (Albania) and fellow Filipino hotspot Coron to the honour.

European destinations Catania (Italy), Palma de Mallorca (Spain), Tirana (Albania), Ericeira (Portugal) and Palmero (Italy) rounded out the top ten spots for Australian budget travellers.

One Aussie destination made the 2020 list, with Broome replacing Sydney at 20th on the back of a 4% annual rise in bookings.

Hostelworld’s recent Evolution of the Hostel Traveller report found that one in three (33%) travellers expect once-in-a-lifetime experiences through travel, which might explain the growing prevalence of less worn routes on the list.

Phong Nha, Vietnam

However, despite the decline in tried and tested destinations generally, the inclusion of places like Canggu and Gili Trawangan (both Indonesia), and Ibiza (Spain), which all experienced year-on-year growth in bookings (10%, 4% and 8% respectively), show that many shoestring travellers still want to stick with what they know.

Hostelworld’s Top 20 Destinations for 2020 based on Australian customer booking data between 2018 and 2019:

1. Siargao Island, Philippines

2. La Spezia, Italy

3. Phong Nha, Vietnam
