Tourists end up in Venice canal in pursuit of the perfect selfie

A group of tourists visiting the floating city got more than they bargained for after deciding the view from their seat wasn’t quite optimal.

The group apparently refused to stop taking selfies despite being warned.

The quest for the perfect selfie has resulted in some hilarious, and in some cases tragic, mishaps, as travellers abandon every bastion of social decorum in the pursuit of social media virality.

Venice provided the setting for the most recent example this past weekend, when a group of five tourists ended up in Rio de la Verona Canal after standing up during their gondola ride to line up their on-location self-portrait as the craft approached a low bridge, CNN reports.

Despite the gondolier warning the group not to stand up, a video on Instagram shows all occupants clinging to the side after the gondola went upside-down in a narrow passage of water, which must have been rather cold at this time of the year.

Thankfully, there were no injuries, apart from some lost pride and the loss of one mobile phone. The gondola itself was also undamaged and simply needed to be hosed out and dried.

That said, the state of the canal water leaves a lot to be desired, with the canals cleaned about once every decade and known to be full of human waste and garbage.
