Australasia’s leading airline, accommodation brands and destination have been unveiled at the 2018 World Travel Awards Asia & Australasia Gala Ceremony in Hong Kong.
For the second time, in a category in only its second year, Air New Zealand was named Australasia’s Leading Airline at the awards, which are voted for by travel and tourism professionals as well as global business and leisure travellers.
Air New Zealand Chief Marketing and Customer Officer Mike Tod said it was fantastic to have been recognised by both customers and the travel industry.
“This award is a reflection of the commitment our 12,000 staff around the world put into ensuring we deliver products and services that our nation can be proud of," Mr Tod remarked.
But the big winner in the region was Sydney, which won “Australasia’s Leading Destination” and whose airport was named “Australasia’s Leading Airport”.
On top of that, Sydney’s Sheraton on the Park was awarded Australasia’s Leading Hotel and its Royal Suite named Australia’s Leading Hotel Suite at the event, which was held at InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong.
Elsewhere, the InterContinental Sydney was named Australia’s Leading Hotel while also picking up awards for Australasia's Leading Business Hotel, Australasia's Leading Executive Club Lounge and Australasia's Leading Hotel Suite for the Australia Suite.
Meanwhile, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts won awards for “Asia’s Leading Hotel Brand” and “Australasia’s Leading Hotel Brand”.
The award for “Australasia's Leading Serviced Apartment Brand” went to Frasers Hospitality.
Proving its position as the region’s top events city, Melbourne was named Australasia's Leading Meetings and Conference Destination for the fifth time, with Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) named Australasia’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre for the seventh consecutive year.
Beating off stiff competition, Vietnam was named “Asia’s Leading Destination” while Hainan Airlines collected awards for “Asia’s Leading Airline Brand”, “Asia’s Leading Airline – Business Class” and “Asia’s Leading Cabin Crew”.
