Tripadvisor: new 2021 travel mindset is here

What are Aussie travellers seeking this year?

Luxury trips, with a side order of self-care, are on the menu for travellers looking to make up for lost time in 2021, new research has found.

According to Tripadvisor search data, holidaymakers will spend more on luxury destinations and accommodation this year after the 2020 lull, with the average cost of a future international vacation planned by Australians on the site rising 13% in the first three weeks of January when compared to two years ago.

The Tripadvisor research was based on global search behaviour and sentiment data across six markets (US, UK, Australia, Italy, Japan and Singapore), and according to Tripadvisor, revealed a “new 2021 travel mindset” targeting luxury travel.

Among the Australians polled, one in nine (11%) said that they planned to book luxury accommodation in 2021, with almost one in 10 (9%) having already done so.

Luxury beach and spa resorts appeared to be rebounding quickest year-on-year.

“If dipping your toes in the bath was the closest you came to a poolside break last year, then you are not alone,” Tripadvisor senior research analyst Val Anthony said.

“2020 was a year the world’s horizons narrowed by necessity, but that has only made travellers everywhere more determined than ever to spend big on adventure and exploration in 2021, and we are seeing that in the trips millions are planning around the world.”

When it comes to the high-end destinations Aussies are seeking this year, Singapore showed the biggest Y-o-Y increase in hotel searches in the first half of January.

The data also showed that splurging wasn’t just limited to the cost of each trip, but to the number of trips travellers plan to take, with nearly a quarter (22%) of Australians surveyed saying they intended to take three or more international trips in 2021. Only time will tell if that will be possible.
