Some couples are just happy to be on holidays… others clearly need more than a break.
An argument over cigarettes that turned “violent” in a Darwin casino has left a Victorian couple heavily in debt and “stranded” in the Top End for months.
According to the ABC, the pair had checked into Darwin’s Sky City Casino after wet season road closures forced the cancellation of their camping plans.
A night of heavy drinking followed, and when the woman asked her partner if he had any cigarettes, and he swore at her, she punched him in the face, Darwin Local Court heard.
The woman’s lawyer told Judge Elizabeth Morris that the man retaliated by throwing her on the floor, before the woman threw a bottle in his general direction.
The man then forced his partner on the bed and spat in her face.
After four other hotel guests overheard the assaults, police intervened.
Charged with aggravated assault, the man was ordered to stay in Darwin until sentencing in late May. The woman was also charged with aggravated assault.
According to the ABC, the pair is still in Darwin as they face $20,000 in legal fees and unexpected accommodation costs.
They probably won’t be going back to the Top End anytime soon after this trip, we think.
