Holidaymakers and locals were evacuated from parts of Tenerife as 40-foot waves battered the island.
Footage shows enormous waves smashing a part of the island’s northern coastline, including highrise apartments perched on the edge of the waterfront in the tourist town of Mesa del Mar, ITV reported.
According to local reports, dozens of people were forced to leave their homes as locals were also filmed fleeing flash floods.
The largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, Tenerife is usually a magnet for Europeans seeking sun, sea and sand holidays.
Elsewhere, parts of the Spanish mainland including the east coast province of Valencia and Costa Blanca are bracing for the storm as it heads north on Tuesday.
