As food travel, and culinary capers in general, continue to be the rage among travellers and holidaymakers, new data has revealed the cities in which we’re likely to have the best dining experiences.
The research, which was conducted by travel site Globehunters, looks at 50 of the world’s major cities, considering factors such as price, variety of food, number of restaurants per capita, number of eateries on La Lista (in other words, the critics’ score), and percentage of fine dining, vegetarian/vegan and fast food restaurants.
According to the 2019 Gourmet Globetrotter Guide, the top five cities (overall) and their ‘gourmet score’ were: Paris (France, 58.54), Tokyo (Japan, 57.61), Barcelona (Spain, 55.98), Lisbon (Portugal, 53.92) and London (UK, 52.45).
Although any list that places Sydney in 21st place (45.59), entirely omits famous gourmand town Melbourne, and rates Budapest and Amsterdam above Singapore, should probably be taken with a pinch of salt.
