You can now pay for your next holiday by using cryptocurrency

A new online booking portal allows payments to be made using a number of different virtual currencies.

Cryptocurrency owners say travel is how they'd like to spend their virtual funds.

Australian cryptocurrency payment platform RelayPay has joined forces with travel technology firm TRAVLR to launch a new booking portal allowing payments to be made with virtual currency.

Known as, the site draws on TRAVLR’s white label booking engine to access rates for airfares, 1.2 million hotels, group touring, cruising and more than 200,000 day tours and activities around the world.

The platform accepts payments using Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDC as the eligible cryptocurrencies.

While it certainly has its risks, cryptocurrency is rapidly growing in popularity in Australia, with 29% of the population already owning a virtual currency of some form.

This figure is expected to grow to 43%, or eight-million Australians, in the next five years. There are more than one-billion cryptocurrency users globally.

According to a WorldPlay survey, travel ranked highest as the product cryptocurrency owners would most like to pay for, with 60% of current crypto owners intending to use their virtual funds to pay for a real-world product or service in the near future.

RelayPay Head of Growth, Eric Wu said creating a travel platform for cryptocurrency owners to plan and book their next holiday was an exciting opportunity.

“Australians spent an average of $5,000 on travel in 2022 and with so many options available through an end-to-end travel platform like wentravel, we are confident it has something to suit every traveller’s needs,” Wu said.
