Pride Flights: proof the journey can be just as good as the destination

Both Qantas and Virgin have this week launched tickets onboard their respective Pride Flights to celebrate Sydney WorldPride. And from the looks of the epic inflight entertainment, it will almost be worth flying AWAY from Sydney just for the flight back to it.

Next year will be the first time the three-week WorldPride festival is being held in the Southern hemisphere and coincides with Sydney’s LGBTQI+ Mardi Gras.

Qantas, which has proudly supported the global LGBTQI+ community is the sponsor airline for WorldPride and on 22 February 2023 will send is WorldPride Flight from Los Angeles to Sydney.

Customers on Qantas’ WorldPride Flight will not only enjoy an array of experiences hosted by Australian comedian Joel Creasey, and get some pretty spesh, limited edition ‘Rainbow Roo’ Qantas pyjamas designed specifically for the flight, they will also walk away with a general admission ticket to Live and Proud: Sydney WorldPride Opening Concert, featuring special guest performer Kylie Minogue!

“Supporting the LGBTQI+ community is part of the Qantas spirit and this flight will be operated by members of the Qantas Illuminate network, a community of Qantas LGTBQI+ employees and their allies,” Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said.

“We are proud to bring visitors from the USA not only to celebrate Sydney WorldPride, but also to experience all that this vibrant city and country has to offer.”

Not to be outdone, Virgin Australia will more than double Pride Flight services to Sydney next year, with the launch of maiden Pride Flight services from Adelaide and Perth, and the first international service from San Francisco operated in partnership with United Airlines.

All Virgin Australia Pride Flight tickets sold include complimentary entry to the official Pride Flight Landing Party at iconic LGBTQIA+ venue, The Beresford, in Sydney and $30 from the sale of each ticket on Virgin Australia-operated services will be donated to the Minus18 LGBTQIA+ youth charity.

Virgin Australia-operated Pride Flight services will be hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under stars, Coco Jumbo, Karen From Finance, Kween Kong and Maxi Shield, along with some of Australia’s leading drag talent, including Barbie Q, Penny Tration, Philmah Bocks, Sexy Galexy and Tora Hymen.

Flights from Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth will include a pre-flight departure party with special entertainment by local LGBTQIA+ venues (Fluffy, Sircuit, Mary’s Poppin’ and Connections Nightclub), celebrity appearances, mid-air drag performances, bottomless beverages, including DJ entertainment, dancing, and all of the wonders you’d expect from a rainbow celebration at over 30,000 feet.
