Revealed: the world’s most dangerous airlines

And what are the safest carriers?

Analyzing 400 airlines globally, AirlineRatings.com has revealed the least safe carriers in the world.

According to the safety and product rating website, in its annual review of airline safety the lowest ranked airlines for 2019 are Ariana Afghan Airlines (Afghanistan), Bluewing Airlines (Suriname), Kam Air (Afghanistan) and Trigana Air Service (Indonesia). Each carrier scored one and two star safety ratings.

At the other end of the scale, the safest airline in the world, once again, is Qantas. The world’s oldest continuously operating airline, AirlineRatings says Qantas has “amassed an amazing record of firsts in operations and safety and is now accepted as the industry’s most experienced airline”.

“The Australian airline has been a leader in the development of: Future Air Navigation System; the flight data recorder to monitor plane and later crew performance; automatic landings using Global Navigation Satellite System as well as precision approaches around mountains in cloud using RNP,” it said, adding that Qantas has also led the industry with real-time monitoring of engines using satellite communications.

In assessing carriers, AirlineRatings considered audits from aviation’s governing and industry bodies, government audits, airlines’ crash and serious incident records, profitability, industry-leading safety initiatives and fleet age.

“All airlines have incidents every day and many are aircraft manufacture issues, not airline operational problems,” editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas said.

“It is the way the flight crew handles incidents that determines a good airline from an unsafe one.

“So just lumping all incidents together is very misleading. And some countries incident reporting systems are weak further complicating matters.”
