The 15 minutes that’ll save you on flights

AirAsia releases $99 fares from Victoria’s new second international airport

Imagine if the international airport experience was easy. Little confusion or chaos just a hassle free means to an end. Now imagine that fares from it were cheap. Like $99 to KL cheap.

From 5 December this year Melbourne will have a second international airport. And AirAsia’s long haul carrier AirAsia X will be the first to fly internationally from it.

To celebrate, the airline is offering special open for sale fares from just AUD $99* to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) $147* to Phuket (Thailand), $154* to Bangkok (Thailand), $157* to Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), $153* to Siem Reap (Cambodia) and $229* to Delhi (India), the lowest they’ve ever been for departures ex Melbourne.

Even without the special fares, the news has been met with much excitement for travellers and travel agents in the greater Geelong region and beyond, travel agents telling Traveltalk the move will be “great for business”.

“When you consider the population base, Avalon is a need,” Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren told media and trade in Melbourne today.

“Victoria now has two curfew-free international airports,” he added.

Melbournians too will likely take advantage of the additional international gateway, despite Avalon’s reputation for being farther away.

According to an AirAsia Australia spokesperson, travelling from a suburb such as Sandringham in Melbourne’s southeast to Avalon instead of Tullamarine would add only 15 minutes to the journey. Add to the fact there is no toll, easy parking and less commotion, passengers will likely get that time back.

Construction of a new international terminal is currently underway at Avalon Airport and, when finished, will feature state of the art facilities and the latest innovations in customs equipment and processes.

The inaugural AirAsia X Flight D7218 will arrive at Melbourne Avalon on the morning of the 5thDecember 2018.

The airline has updated its booking system to reflect the new terminal, Avalon Airport (Airport code AVV) for all flights arriving and departing from 5 December, 2018. Melbourne Tullamarine (Airport code MEL) will continue to remain available for bookings until 4 December, 2018.

Guests booked to travel with AirAsia from Melbourne from 5 December will be contacted directly by the airline and provided with their new travel details including a range of provisions should they wish to amend their travel plans.
