The new Qantas offering? It’s a Mystery

Qantas looks to stimulate domestic travel while borders remain closed

Resurrecting a concept it last ran in the 1990s, Qantas has unveiled a series of domestic mystery experiences for travellers.

The three weekend adventures – departing Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane from late March to early May – will include dedicated flights on a B737, low altitude flybys of key landmarks, and activities at destinations, which are all located outside of major capital cities.

During the maximum two-hour flights, passengers will be served meals and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

While destinations will remain a mystery, customers will be given clues to ensure adventures match their interests and to help with packing.

“Our customers tell us that where they can and can’t travel within Australia has been a bit of a mystery lately,” Qantas Group Chief Customer Officer Stephanie Tully remarked.

“The vaccine rollout is bringing a lot more certainty and domestic border restrictions should soon be a thing of the past.”

“In the meantime, these flights turn that mystery into a positive by creating a unique experience for the many people keen to start travelling again.

“As well as helping bring more of our people back to work, these mystery flights are another way to support tourism operators in regional areas especially, who have been hit particularly hard by several waves of travel restrictions.”

Qantas’ Mystery Flight Experiences follow the carrier’s Flight to Nowhere and Flight to Somewhere concepts, which the airline says “proved extremely popular”.

Available from $737 for Economy and $1,579 for Business, seats on the Mystery Flights go on sale at midday 4 March. All carbon emissions will be offset for the flights.

Qantas has outlined each trip to help travellers decide whether an adventure would be appropriate for them.
